Daddy
I painted this picture from an old black and white photograph taken around 1939-40. The quality of the photograph was poor and my father's facial features appeared blurry which I took advantage of in this painting. This is the only painting I will ever do of my father.

A Hole in My Heart a Self-Portrait
Around the age of 5, 1950, I stopped feeling the emotion love. My father's betrayal caused me to withdraw from the world around me and, to prevent myself from being hurt again, I taught myself to block the physical feeling of love leaving me with a large empty hole in my heart.

Childhood fantasy
As a young child, my sister Teresa and I took ballet lessons. My mother made us beautiful butterfly costumes with huge wings for one of the recitals. I wore the wings day and night pretending to be a fairy with the magical power to make the nightmares and fear I constantly experienced disappear. It was a lovely concept but, unfortunately, it didn't work.

Saying Goodnight to Diane
Although my sister Diane died in a horseback riding accident when I was still a baby, I had many vivid memories of her. My mother told me to look out into the night sky for the brightest star saying it was Diane looking down at me. Every night, before going to bed, I would look up into the sky and say goodnight to her. I still do.

Sister Superior did not hide the fact that she did not like me. She often slapped me on the back of the head and took every opportunity to remind me that I was not as smart as my older sister, Teresa. At the time I held strong feelings of hatred for Sister Superior, but now I look back with sadness knowing she was clearly a very unhappy person.

Cantinflas, 1911-1993, one of Mexico's foremost comedians.
According to Cantinflas the title of the movie "Ahi esta el detalle" came about from the nickname that the working class gave to marijuana. In the middle of a live performance, Cantinflas asks a co-performer, "Ahi esta el detalle?" ("Where lies the detail?") Most of the people in the audience realized he was talking about Cannabis and were convulsed with laughter. His ability to speak eloquent gibberish helped make Cantinflas a household word in Mexico. The circles on this painting were originally digitally added. I later added them to the original painting. The orange color is less bold on the original.
